I have worked in safety since 1972 and in 1990 I received the MBE for my services to occupational safety and health. I am a Chartered Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and have received the RoSPA Distinguished Service Award for services to health and safety. In 2006 I received the IOSH President’s Distinguished Service Certificate, and in 2011 I received the IOSH Lifetime Achievement Award. I am a board member of the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants’ Register and my leisure interests include: listening to music; travel; walking; photography; and motorcycling (almost every day since April 1965!). Since 1994 I have been RoSPA’s occupational safety adviser, advising the Society on all matters related to work related risk and helping colleagues to expand our contribution to the British ‘health and safety system’. I contribute to RoSPA’s occupational health and safety journals, help to organise our health and safety events and awards programmes, service our National Occupational Health and Safety Committee and I have helped to initiate a number of RoSPA ‘key issue’ projects such as: managing occupational road risk; strengthening accident investigation; promoting action on health and safety leadership; and improving health and safety help and assistance to small firms. I am also secretary of ‘Safety Groups UK’ (www.safetygroupsuk.org.uk) and have helped to re-energise the work of RoSPA affiliated Health and Safety Groups.
