Since 2014, The RoSPA Guardian Angel Award Scheme has been recognising individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the safety of either their organisation or the wider community. This year is no exception, and RoSPA is on the hunt for more safety heroes!
In this special post, we shine the spotlight on three of last year’s winners, to find out what it means to be a RoSPA Guardian Angel…
Roger Ainsworth – Executive Advisor, Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd
Awarded a Guardian Angel Award in 2017, Roger Ainsworth has helped make Megamas Training Company Sdn Bhd a top HSE training provider. He has established Megamas’s position as a ‘World Class’ and market leading organisation.
They have one of the finest facilities in South East Asia. Roger has played a key part of embedding safety into the fabric of the business and creating a ‘family’ environment. The nomination was for his achievements throughout his career.
Roger remarks, “These RoSPA Awards have really helped give my employer more confidence to introduce new initiatives and to promote the company’s excellent safety performance.”
Sarah Haigh – Quality, Health, Safety and Environment Manager, e.surv Chartered Surveyors
In 2015, Sarah set out to not only protect lone workers, but make sure they had the correct training to carry out dynamic risk assessments and be confident in their roles as residential surveyors. Starting the project from scratch, Sarah’s positive leadership has inspired those around her and given employees confidence in their jobs.
Due to Sarah’s hard work, e.surv has a team that is comfortable and confident. They have the skills to assess a dangerous situation, and should the worst happen, they have a robust emergency solution in place.
We asked Sarah if she had any advice for people who are working to raise safety awareness: “Don’t give up. The long-term rewards are well worth it and once the culture and positive attitude is embedded, you have to work hard to maintain it.”
Since winning the awards, e.surv has achieved a Level 3 RoSPA Quality Safety Audit and OHSAS 18001.
They are aiming for a Gold Award in 2019. “The Awards are an amazing experience that offer insight into the huge world of health and safety, and how many others have worked hard to achieve awards.”
Chia Liangwei – Senior WSH Officer of Environmental, Health & Safety Unit, Teambuild Engineering and Construction Pte Ltd
Chia has spearheaded many initiatives in environmental health and safety. He has enhanced the overall safety and health performance in the workplace.
Chia was instrumental in designing eye-catching and motivational safety banners to deliver important safety messages to the workers. The Award is not only an achievement on his part, but it also affirms the company’s commitment to achieving a strong safety and health culture, exemplary standards and outcomes.
“I’m motivated and committed to the safety and health of my colleagues and workers, so I make sure that they start and finish their work safely. In short, work safely and we will get home safely to our families!”
Is there someone in your organisation or in the local community who you think deserves to stand next to these RoSPA Guardian Angels? We’ve had a great response so far, but we’re sure there are more safety champions out there! If you know someone who’s made a difference to the safety of those around them, nominate today.
